The On the Levee Jazz Band plays the music of New Orleans' own Kid Ory and his Creole Jazz Band.
Edward "Kid" Ory was one of the best-known and most highly-regarded trombonists to emerge from New Orleans. He developed the "tailgate" style of trombone playing as a young man. Ory's youthful appearance and engaging personality resulted in the nickname "Kid." He led one of the most popular bands in New Orleans, and featured many of the great musicians who would go on to define the Hot Jazz style.
With an intimate knowledge of and respect for Ory’s attention to dynamics, danceable tempos, and swinging rhythm, drummer Hal Smith's On the Levee Jazz Band features trombonist Clint Baker and New Orleans' finest jazz musicians.
A quote from a recent performance:
Dear Hal and members of On the Levee Band:
It was great fun, personally, to be involved in this project. I certainly agree, the music was wonderful. Thanks for all the effort you put, personally, toward the project. Thanks to the individual members for their skill, performance and enthusiasm. Yes, for the most part, our audience “really listened!” And, our audience got a musical history lesson, too, without their realizing it!
Thanks again, Hal, both personally and on behalf of Jazz Pensacola to you and your outstanding musical group! You enriched our lives!
